For one thing, this 22nd Commissario Guido Brunetti mystery is not a Questura case. It's a story that evolves from Paola Falier Brunetti's concern and curiosity about the death of the boy from the Brunetti family's dry cleaners whom they'd seen there for years, standing in the back room, folding things and always looking so sad. Most customers knew him as "The boy who didn't speak" and assumed he was a relative of the proprietors, and that he was not only deaf but probably also mute. No one seemed to know his name. At Paola's urging, Brunetti starts looking into what had happened and soon finds that the dead boy/man did have a name and a cold and taciturn mother he lived with. Was his death accidental or intentional? And if intentional, was it suicide or murder? No way to tell.Brunetti also finds that nowhere in the public records is there any evidence this boy/man had ever existed. That conundrum piques the interest of some of Brunetti's Questura colleagues. Just as this story is quite a bit different from what we're used to, so too are the supporting roles. Brunetti's sidekick, Vianello, gets involved for awhile, then drops out of the picture. Everyone's favorite computer hacker, Elettra, has relatively little to do here, as does Patta, who thinks Brunetti's still out investigating a case he's already solved. Meanwhile, we get to spend quite a lot of time getting to know Foa and Pucetti a lot better. Then, about halfway through, comes a nice surprise when Commissaria Claudia Griffoni, the only female detective at the Questura, who was introduced five or six books ago and hasn't been seen since, takes over the sidekick role usually played by Vianello.As for the story itself: Unusual, to say the least, absolutely fascinating, populated with some exceedingly odd characters and told in a somewhat more leisurely style than we're used to. And, in the end, the Bad Egg'll get one whale of a comeuppance. Highly recommended for series fans. In Quietly in Their Sleep, Donna Leon’s intrepid Italian policeman, Commissario Guido Brunetti, receives a visit from one of the nuns who has been caring for his aged mother in a nursing home. He knows her as Suor’ Immacolata (Sister Immaculate) though she has shed her habit and appears panicked. She tells a confused story about a cluster of deaths in the nursing home which she found suspicious. Her efforts to question the circumstances of those deaths had been rebuffed by her Mother Superior and her confessor. Their response was to transfer her summarily to another nursing home where her suspicions were heightened. Even though there is no clear case for a police investigation, Brunetti feels compelled to look into the matter because Suor’ Immacolata had treated his mother with loving care and he perceives her as being unfailingly honest. His ensuing inquiry brings him into face-to-face conflict with religious fanatics, powerful officials in the Catholic Church, and, eventually, with his flagrantly incompetent boss, all of whom try to shut him down.Unaccountably, Donna Leon has lived in Venice for a quarter-century — unaccountably, because she has a pronounced habit of taking on one or another ugly aspect of Italian culture in each of the novels in the Commissario Brunetti series. Quietly in Their Sleep spotlights corruption and misuse of power in the Italian Church. Venal prelates, obsequious nuns, religion-obsessed laypeople, and even Opus Dei, a powerful right-wing Catholic secret society, all make appearances in this novel. Unfortunately, though the story is intriguing, the quality of Leon’s writing here is not at the level of the first five novels in the series. (Quietly in Their Sleep is the sixth.) The tale is simplistic and predictable. But I’m not giving up yet on the series. Maybe the seventh will be better.

The truth is elusive as Commissario Brunetti attempts to uncover the truth, but finds his quest more challenging at eachturn. While following Brunetti's trail, we learn a great deal about several major characters.Each book in this outstanding series deals with different but major aspects of Italian life - finance, immigration,toxic waste, fishing rights, glass-making,tourism, medicine,private education , plastic surgery, horoscopes and through it all, the role the Catholic Churchplays in each life. I read a great deal, and Ms Leonis at the top of my list. Her writing is simply brilliant, and I await each new book with eager anticipation .Start at the beginning and watch each major character grow in depth. Highly recommended!

After reading over a dozen of Donna Leon's novels it's difficult to say which one I loved the best but this one is centered around the Catholic Church and it brought back memories of my childhood in Catholic Quebec so it was difficult to put down...but then almost all her novels are like that...so fun and exciting to read...she is now in my top ten or so favorite authors and that's saying something for me...I read one or two books a week and because I read on Kindle I'm able to stock up on good books; so when I finish one I can go quickly to another favorite...much better than the olden days when finishing a book was dreadful and had to go to bookstores and look for something else to read next...I love that on Amazon I'm abler to review tons of books giving me a description of the contents and a list of comments from previous readers,,,Hey, and Kindle prices for best sellers and great authors is so much less expensive than in the past when I had to pay upwards of $25 per book...Kindles are less than half the price of paper books. and Hey, back to this book, I loved it!

It is not an interpretation or a critical analysis of the content of the book. Neither does it provide any personal opinion. It primarily guides reader through a systematic study of the Íqán while providing some background information on topics raised by Bahá’u’lláh in each paragraph. It is called a tutorial as it attempts to simulate, as much as possible, the tutor-tutored relationship in a self-paced personal study. All the references in the tutorial are sourced either from authoritative Bahá’í materials or obtained from other reliable sources. The 290 paragraphs of The Kitáb-i-Íqán are apportioned for study to 58 chapters. The size and complexity of each chapter reflects the content and intricacy of the issues addressed in the paragraphs included therein. Each chapter starts with an introduction that highlights the key ideas. Then in a coherent manner, background information on the terminologies, references and mystical concepts inherent in each paragraph is provided. The tutorial covers the 266 topics embedded in The Kitáb-i-Íqán. IDEO, of course, is very well known for its consulting on all types of innovation, mostly within corporations. This book provides insights into the IDEO methodology in the form of descriptions of 10 working styles that contribute to innovation. The descriptions are well done, and many examples are included that bring the descriptions to life. I recommend the book to anyone looking to improve innovation in large organizations (those with more traditional management patterns). The only thing that is somewhat lacking for the typical manager is a more comprehensive description of the organizational culture and management systems that are necessary for these working styles to be effective. Yes, they can have some impact in any organization. However, organizations must create a climate that supports their practice in order to reap the true value. The author implies this, but really does not discuss it. That limitation does not detract from the value of the book as long as one understands that, while the people are the primary driver of innovation, they will not be very effective (and may not even stay) unless the environment in which they work supports innovation (e.g., a company organizes around real people not an idealized model of a corporate citizen.)

This is book that I saw people reading in first class on airplanes....Kelley is up front about his purpose, "This is a book about people", specifically, "the roles people can play, the hats they can put on, the personas they can adopt" (p. 7). Using the notion of persona, Kelley puts forth 10 innovation personas. His starting point is to point out the ill effect the "Devil's Advocate" can have on innovation by drawing the conversation towards negativity and nay-saying. Kelley asserted, "By developing some of these innovation personas, you'll have a chance to put the Devil's Advocate in his place" (p. 7). Kelley organizes his personas into three categories (pp. 09-11):The Learning Personas - The Anthropologist, The Experimenter, The Cross-PollinatorThe Organizing Personas - The Hurdler, The Collaborator, The DirectorThe Building Personas - The Experience Architect, The Set Designer, The Caregiver, The StorytellerKelley is quick to note that the personas are NOT personality types, instead they are important roles that can be adopted by team members (p. 13). He goes on to say the "innovation roles give you a chance to broaden your creative range" (p. 13).This book enhanced my reflection of prior experiences with team formation and gave me a new toolkit from which to consider team member strengths and the overall team makeup appropriate for a given project's objectives. It also gave me new lens from which to consider scenarios. For example, How might a hurdler look at this situation? How might a set designer? How might an anthropologist? etc. By imagining the differing roles and trying to see the world as an innovation personal might see them, I'm asking new questions and considering things I might not have considered before. A wonderful book!

This was a pretty good book about ten different roles people play in doing creative work. The ten roles made sense to me and I have lately found myself thinking things like 'oh yeah this guy is a total hurdler...'Beyond this however I have a hard time figuring out how to use this book to make myself or my team better at creative work. It felt this was mainly because the author stayed on the surface of describing 'what' the roles were and 'how' they did their job, rather then talking about things like 'if you are having this problem in your work, you need to find someone to champion the anthropologist role'.

Tom Kelley really does a great job in writing this follow-up to 'The Art of Innovation'. This book goes into a good amount of detail as to the different necessary personae needed to efficiently design a product/service. The stories in this book are great and allow you to understand what Tom is trying to convey. Of course I disagree with some of his sentence structure, but that's just how he writes and being one of the top design firms in the world (IDEO), I figure I can be understanding. Hopefully this book does for you what it has for me.Don't feel obligated to read 'The Art of Innovation' before this book, though it will make for a slightly smoother ride when reading. No biggie here...If you do not find this review helpful, please comment as to why. Thank you!

A good read with valuable insights. While the principles hold up, many of the examples are very dated, which could make it difficult to comprehend. In general, I think the book could have been half the size and been just as helpful.

My grandma prayed this beautiful novena every day of her life. Following her example I have prayed it through different challenges in my own life. My prayers have always been answered. I prefer the original not the version with the Luminous mysteries. That’s the one my grandma used and the one I will use. Thanks for making it available!

Much better than the newer, "updated" version. The pictures and writing style are beautiful. As much as I wish the Luminous Mysteries were included, this original book is best. The updated version was very disappointing.

I prayed with this little book when I was a teenager in the 1960s, and I am delighted that it is back in print. The introduction in it gives a beautiful example of what one is doing when one prays the rosary. Its setup -- that we give the Blessed Mother Mary a rose every time we pray a Hail Mary, make a bouquet of each ten Hail Marys by binding them with a petition for a particular virtue, and then weave the five bouquets together with a Spiritual Communion to make a crown for Our Lady's head -- helps me focus my prayer and pray the rosary with love. This edition of "Rosary Novenas to Our Lady" contains only the Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious mysteries of the rosary. I believe a newer version is also available that contains the Luminous mysteries as well.If anyone finds the rosary a difficult prayer to pray, this little booklet might be a big help.

Had the small version of this but lost it during a move. Same exact thing here but just much BIGGER! (little booklet vs a regular size book) It is a copy of the original so not as perfectly clear in the printing but it's fine for me. Classic, awesome Rosary novena. Can't go wrong with this one!
