Concluding chapters to each section place those New Testament texts in conversation with each other. A concluding chapter pulls the threads of the various parts and chapters together with a description of the major theological emphases of the New Testament viewed as a whole. Introduction Chapter 1 The Theology of the New Testament: The Basic Questions Since the eighteenth century, the discipline of New Testament theology has come under close scrutiny. Should the discipline be abandoned? Some have said so. Does it only need to be restructured? Some have offered new models. In the discussion, two problems with the discipline have repeatedly emerged as most significant. The first problem, it is said, is an unhealthy blend in the discipline of dogmatics with historical concerns. On the one hand, theological convictions influence New Testament theologians both in the conclusions they draw about the meaning of the New Testament texts and in their insistence on examining only the canonical documents. On the other hand, since the church values these documents largely for the historical claims made in them, New Testament theologians find that they must work as historians in much the same way that any historian would work with ancient texts. Is it possible to bring together faith and reason in this way, or must New Testament theologians bracket their own dogmatic presuppositions about the importance of the New Testament and place the canonical texts on a level with all other ancient texts? If so, then they should shift their attention away from the theologically biased investigation of 'New Testament theology' to the more objective and universally useful task of describing the history of early Christian thought. The second problem arises from the theological diversity of the New Testament texts. The New Testament documents not only express a variety of theological themes, but sometimes they speak in different ways on the same theme. Do these differences sometimes amount to contradiction? If not, why is the theological coherence of the New Testament sometimes so hard to detect? If so, is it accurate to speak of 'New Testament theology' at all, as if we are speaking of some coherent whole? Theology or History? Since the sixteenth century, biblical theologians have struggled with the relationship between interpreting the Bible to find support for the church's traditional theological teachings and interpreting the Bible within its own historical context without consideration for the theological convictions of the church. Because the church has traditionally held to the primacy of Scripture over its traditions (even if extrabiblical tradition is given great weight), ideally no conflict should arise. In fact, the church's traditions and the theological emphases of the Bible have often been incompatible, and so any study of biblical theology has often been characterized by the tension between theological conviction and historical analysis. Biblical theology arose early in the Reformation era as a discipline intended to chasten the church's unbiblical theological speculations and to hasten its reform. The emphasis at this time was more on theological reform than on sensitivity to the historical situations in which the biblical documents were composed. Later, biblical theology fell under the spell of Enlightenment rationalism, and some of its practitioners began to define the discipline in terms of a historically motivated and theologically independent study of the Bible that could use human reason to sit in judgment not only on the teachings of the church, but on the content of the Bible itself. Out of this link between biblical theology and the Enlightenment arose a criticism of the discipline itself. Why speak of 'biblical' theology at all? If the student of the biblical texts is to be truly an historian, then it is necessary to speak only of the history of Jewish and Christian thought and religion---to speak of the Bible, or of the New Testament, is already to speak in dogmatic language that the historian interested in the objective study of the past must find unacceptable. Over the last three centuries, three criticisms of the discipline as theologically rather than historically grounded have been particularly influential. J. P. Gabler, William Wrede, and Heikki R™is™nen, writing at the turn of the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries respectively, called for the liberation of the historical study of the Bible or early Christianity from the dogmatic concerns of the church. Gabler's seminal challenge differs from that of Wrede and R™is™nen because it is simply a call for methodological clarity in the theological enterprise rather than a disparagement of the theologically motivated study of the Bible. Nevertheless, both Wrede and R™is™nen understand themselves to be standing on the shoulders of Gabler. It is important, therefore, to consider Gabler's challenge to the discipline before evaluating the more direct attacks of Wrede and R™is™inen. In order to understand all three thinkers and to put our criticisms of their challenges in historical perspective, it is necessary first to survey briefly the historical roots of biblical, and specifically New Testament, theology. The Early History of the Discipline The development of a 'biblical theology' had its roots in the age-old commitment of the church to govern its theology and practice by the canonical writings of the Old and New Testaments. One of the most important concerns of the Reformation was that the church reform its doctrine and worship so that it might be more faithful to the standards laid down in the Bible. In 1521, Luther's close friend and colleague at the University of Wittenburg, Philip Melancthon, published one of the earliest theological treatises of the Reformation---a brief treatment of important theological topics based on Luther's lectures on Paul's letter to the Romans given in the summer of 1519 and repeated the following year. This treatment of Loci communes rerum theologicarum ('Fundamental Theological Themes') provided a list of important theological topics and then briefly explained the teaching of Scripture, and Scripture alone, on each topic. Melancthon was weary of reading the lengthy speculations of medieval scholastic theologians on Christian theology and wanted instead to discover how the Bible itself, and particularly 'Paul's own compendium of Christian doctrine' in Romans, described the Christian religion. This urge to tap speculative theologians on the shoulder and point them back to the Bible remained a constant theme in the early history of biblical theology as a discrete discipline. Melancthon puts it this way: I am discussing everything sparingly and briefly because the book is to function more as an index than a commentary. I am therefore merely stating a list of the topics to which a person roaming through Scripture should be directed. Further, I am setting forth in only a few words the elements on which the main points of Christian doctrine are based. I do this not to call students away from the Scriptures to obscure and complicated arguments but, rather, to summon them to the Scriptures if I can. As the Reformation matured into Protestantism, however, Protestant thinkers began to refine their theological commitments and to develop complicated theological arguments of their own. In their works, Scripture was often used not so much to set the theological agenda but to demonstrate that the various theological principles that Protestants considered important, and which were now growing increasingly complex, were, in fact, biblical. Those who first used the term 'biblical theology' to describe their theological studies made this proof-texting of preexisting theological systems their goal. A new Protestant brand of scholasticism began to develop with 'biblical theology' as its handmaid. Under the influence of German pietism on one hand and rationalism on the other, biblical theology began to break away from this role as a prop for systematic theology.

George Jonas was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1935. Following the Hungarian uprising of 1956, he emigrated to Canada. Most of the reviews are for other products. This is a wonderful book. It isn't the Holmes stories. Still a five star book. The book is laid out to give an overview of Doyle himself and narratives on major characters - Sherlock, Watson, Moriarity, Lestrade. Each description running from five to ten pages each. Followed by well written descriptions of each of the adventures, the four novels. A nice side work of what was happening in Doyle's life and world events etc. There are lots of full color illustrations and black and white photographs included. The descriptive breakdown of each story help fans with insights into what's going on in each story. There are some good pieces on the influence that Doyle's writings and characters continue to have on his readers and other writers as well. A really well done work on the subject. Very interesting reading.

In fact, I was getting a little tired of purchasing books that kept regurgitating the same information again and again with little new or interesting information to add. So, when I purchased this book, I was a little skeptical and prepared for disappointment. Wow, was I wrong!After the introduction, this book immediately focuses on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as both an individual and an author with a very short, but highly detailed biography. Then, this book dedicates a few small chapters to each of the key characters in the Sherlock Holmes stories and examines how these fictional characters connected were born of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's real life experiences.Then, this book launches directly into a study of each story in the Sherlock Holmes canon. All 56 short stories and the 4 novels are examined in the same manner with one story per chapter.These chapters tend to average about 8 pages per story. Every chapter begins with a sidebar listing technical data about the publication of the story such as publication date, publication format, and the major characters involved. After this technical data, the author presents us with a very abbreviated and concise synopsis of each story in both text and graphic timeline form. It's only after each synopsis that this publication really begins to shine as the author presents a detailed analysis of the story, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's real life influences, the culture of the day, inspirations for the stories, etc...To best illustrate the masterful way this book handles a Sherlock Holmes story, let's take "A Study In Scarlet" as an example:Page 38: Technical data about "A Study in Scarlet" and the publication of the story.Page 38-39: A graphic timeline of the chapters and major plot points (top half of pages)Page 38-39: A detailed synopsis of "A Study in Scarlet" (bottom half of the pages)Page 40: The author discusses the forces that brought Holmes and Watson together for the first time. Discusses the mental abilities of Holmes that were displayed in the story.Page 41: Focuses on Doyle and how his personal life and experiences led to the creation of the famous detective. This book, by a team of several authors, includes an outline of Arthur Conan Doyle's Holmes stories, along with information on Doyle's life and the background for his work. As a lifelong fan of Holmes, I value this excellent reference work.However, the Kindle version has a number of problems. There were quite a few (almost two dozen) "pages" missing - I would tap to turn the page and it would be blank (sometimes for several "pages"), only picking up after I had clearly missed some of the text. The book includes a number of illustrations and diagrams - some of which could be enlarged for easier reading, and some of which could not.For Holmes fans, it would be worth purchasing a paper copy of this fine work. Something - indeed, quite a bit - is lost in the translation to ebook format.

The 'Sherlock Holmes Book (Big Ideas Simply Explained)' was compellingly readable; in fact, it was extremely hard to put down, and was not only very entertainingly illustrated, paced, descriptive, captioned, and the short stories and novels summarized cleverly, but there was so much I learned over the course of these summaries with supporting commentary by the editors of the book regarding Conan Doyle, the historical era, the publishing industry standards and players at that time, the society, and major topics and controversies of the period. Absolutely an essential reference on the world of Sherlock Holmes and Conan Doyle.

Another fascinating book from DK, publisher of hundreds of books that graphically explain stuff. It's a new format for DK but clear with many illustrations. Perhaps aimed at the older kid to the young adult market but delightful for nearly any age. Hard-core Sherlockians may not be entirely pleased, but for those of us who just enjoy the stories and the several TV and movie presentations it's just fine.

Excellent resource for the Sherlockian's library, also a fun introduction , or quick way to go deeper for the newer Sherlockian. I'm a Sherlockian author and quite picky, (as well as knowledgwable) but even I found some good surprises here, and I love the way the book is laid out and organized. Written by experts, and both delightful and informative. Highly recommended.

Great selections and commentary on all things Sherlock Holmes. Especially enjoyed the parts details errors in the stories, and development of Holmes character over the timeline of the stories. Highly recommended for any fan of Sherlock Holmes.

I've been a Holmes fan for over 60 years, and have thoroughly enjoyed revisiting all the 56 stories and 4 short novels through the review/summaries. The background information is very informative and interesting, and the illustrations are wonderful. Highly recommended for old and new fans.

Peter Bruce is a survivor of the gale-plagued 1979 Fastnet Race and a Royal Navy veteran. An avid cruising sailor and racer, he has handled sailboats in all weather. He is the author of several British pilot guides and was the author/editor of the fourth and fifth editions of Heavy Weather Sailing.

This was indeed a spiritual experience for me ... and this book resonated with me ... finding mystery and wonder in nature and the world around us is probably the most wonderful experience. I drove the mountain "off road" roads and the desert "off-road" roads and marveled at nature. every night the Milky Way was overhead and the sky so full of stars that it was difficult to pick out the constellations ... So This book brought me to the Amazon of today and to a great geological mystery. There is a great blend of exploring, science, and a plea for respect and preservation of the world's few remaining wild places.This was a simply wonderful reading experience ... some great "take-aways" and much on which to reflect.I heartily recomment this little book to all!!!!

I discovered this book from a recent TED Talk.Special places exist in the world. This is one of them. It is hoped that he can help keep this river and those who use it pure.A celebration of this unique area is shared in his book. Some neighbors honor and work with those who live here, while others tear down the forests and burn the remains to farm and 'develop' the area.I admire the author Andres Ruzo who has connected with this place. He is trying to preserve the Boiling River and the people who celebrate and honor it. His concern extends to his PhD Thesis on this geologic wonder. He does not want his research used to exploit the people or the resource.

This "TED book" is based on, and extends, a recent TED talk by the author. Ruzo, a grad student in geology, had heard a family story about a river of boiling water, and when he inquired again about it (because it was of interest from a geological point of view), an aunt said she knew all about it, and offered to show it to him. That was important because she was an old friend of the shaman who controlled who got to see the river. This book tells about Ruzo's adventures in finding this boiling river, deep in the Peruvian Amazon forest, and also shows some of the problems of protecting and preserving that forest. Basically, it is a story of how he got a lucky break to learn about this marvel of nature (the river is far larger than any other hot spring anywhere), and took advantage of it. It is very well written, and I enjoyed reading it. My only complaint is that the photos don't come over especially well; the Kindle paper-white screen really is marginal for continuous tone images, and the photos should always be formatted for "landscape" orientation to best utilize the screen area.

So exciting to learn that such wild adventure is still possible in our well-known world! Also it is very well written and the balance between science, traditional beliefs and environmental protection is fantastic. Highly recommend!

Such a great read and wonderful story! It's such a cool tale that feels more like something from a hundred or two hundred years ago than the present day, which adds to the magic of the story. The magic of the story is grounded in solid science - a great combination of the modern meeting the mystical.

This is the second book I have read that I will never forget. The Amazon tribe is amazing. I loved how they honor the environment. It is quite special that the search for this river was motivated by a child's story. The entire book is a learning experience. I would love to visit the boiling river and the people that live there.The last few pages of the book is a list of organizations and others that are working to preserve the river and the jungle. This is not too much more than a geology journal article but it is very informative and well-written. The author is enthusiastic and compassionate about his subject, the people and jungle it impacts and the ethics of bringing the world's attention to it in the midst of catastrophic development.

Very interesting read. Andres Ruzo explains things in an easy to understand manner. To think that many people knew of the boiling river minus geologist. Ruzo and others never did discover source of the boiling river (deep fissures?)

Roberto Serrano is Harrison S. Kravis University Professor at Brown University, Rhode Island, and Research Associate at the Madrid Institute for Advanced Studies, Spain. He has contributed to different areas in microeconomic theory and game theory and his research has been published in leading journals including Econometrica, the Journal of Political Economy, the Review of Economic Studies, the Journal of Economic Theory, Games and Economic Behavior and the SIAM Review. He has received prestigious fellowships and prizes, including the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellowship in 1988 and the Fundación Banco Herrero Prize in 2004, awarded to the best Spanish economist under forty. He is managing editor of Economics Letters and the associate editor of the International Journal of Game Theory and Mathematical Social Sciences. At Brown, he was director of graduate studies from 2006 to 2012 and has served as economics department chair since 2010.

Allan M. Feldman is Professor Emeritus of Economics at Brown University. His research has appeared in the Review of Economic Studies, Econometrica, the American Economic Review, Public Choice, the Journal of Economic Theory, the American Law and Economics Review and other journals. He is co-author (with Roberto Serrano) of Welfare Economics and Social Choice Theory, 2nd edition (2006). Professor Feldman taught economics at Brown University for thirty-eight years, including the intermediate microeconomics course.
